Background:
We are celebrating the Blessing Of The Wine, originated by the French Tradition as an annual celebration of Saint Vincent, the "Protector of the Vines" in Burgundy France. What makes it special to this area of Texas is by introducing T.V. Munson, a Horticulturist. who developed in Texas Phylloxera-resistant rootstocks in the 1880s' that were used to save most of the European Vineyards, and thus the wine-industry at the time after they were all being devastated by serious outbreaks of Phylloxera. The T.V. Munson cuttings were used by French and other European Farmers who grafted their vines onto these rootstocks and stemmed the tide of the disease and saved many French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Chardonnay. Even today, after 135 years, many Central European vines are still grafted on the descendants of Texas plants.
The Event begins with the Act of the Blessing of the Wine at around 10:00am at Heritage Place, followed by a procession. The wine tastings and sales are being offered by the participating wineries of the Sam Houston Wine Trail, and accompanied by Music.
